Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born in July 15, 1606 in the Dutch city of Leiden. Nowadays, he is usually refers to by his given name: Rembrandt. As the eight of nine children, he began his first artistic apprenticeship at the age of 14 with Jacob van Isaacszoon Swanenburgh, an artist who specialized in dramatic depiction of Hell. Anfer completing what is through to have been a four year training period, Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam, just 30 miles to the north, to continue training for half a year with Pieter Lastman, well known at the time for his historical paintings.
