There are many unanswered questions about the life and work of Jan Vermeer . Little is known about his life and his works that have been clearly attributed to him and have survived contain numerous ambiguities. Nevertheless, his is considered not only one of the very best Dutch painters, but also one of the great masters in the history of painting in general. Rembrandt van Rijn and Vermeer are often mention as equals in lists of the major players in the Golden Age Dutch art in the 17th century. Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earing is now considered by many to be “Mona Lisa of the North”. Yet, during his lifetime, Vermeer was barely known beyond the town wall on his home in Delft.
